What is Kairos?

Kairos (pronounced KI-ross) is a Greek word that means “God’s time”. This 3-day retreat provides seniors and younger adults an opportunity to look deep within themselves and evaluate their relationships with God, self, and others in a supportive atmosphere. This powerful experience is offered at most parochial high schools in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and at some universities, and is similar to Christian Awakening, Emmaus, Cursillo, and Christ Renews His Parish retreats for adults.

The giving team is composed of several seniors, young adults, and adults from St. John Church. All student leaders have already experienced Kairos either at their high schools or with St. John, and have volunteered their time to share that experience with other students. All adult leaders have had experience working with young people through retreats and other events.

The retreat schedule includes time for quiet reflection, personal and group discernment, relationship analysis, inner healing, individual and communal reconciliation, recreation, and the opportunity to experience unconditional love. The team will organize follow-up meetings at St. John to support the retreatants and themselves in living out the message of the retreat.

KAIROS is our retreat designed especially for high school seniors and younger adults.  A few juniors are carefully selected to participate in preparation for being on the giving team for the following year.  Also, a few young people who have already experienced Kairos with their Catholic high schools will be selected to round out the team.  This retreat experience is one that can't be missed!

We Include ADULTS too!

Several adults  serve on the giving team, but we may also need adults to serve as chaperones for the weekend.  The giving team begins to form in December, and then meets throughout January and February to prepare for the retreat.  This team includes adults and young people who give "talks" or "witnesses" about set topics.  Certain "talks" must be given by adults because of the life experience required to witness to those particular topics, but most of the "talks" are given by the young people on the team.

Actually, the retreat is already preplanned (e.g., schedule, outlines for "talks", prayer services, etc.).  The team spends much of their prep time getting to know each other, helping each other with "talks", and pulling all the little details together.  They also learn about leading small group discussions and prayer services because these are key elements of the retreat.

Chaperones do not have to help plan the retreat.   They come on the retreat, and help us take good care of all the young people there.  If you would like to talk more about being on the team or serving as a chaperone for the weekend, please call 755-4972 or email the Office of Youth Ministry.
