Thoughts on the Conference...
“The
bishop’s closing homily really struck me.
We often say that youth are the future of the Church.
The bishop said that this is wrong because by saying this we
separate ourselves from them. He suggested that we are just putting up another wall,
strengthening our non-inclusiveness.
Young people are the Church NOW!
We are all one body! We
need to recognize this reality for the good of the whole Church.
Their culture and gifts are a part of us as Church NOW.
My response to the bishop is ‘Amen!’
My questions to St. John the Evangelist Parish are these: In what
ways do we already practice inclusion of young people?
How can we continue to grow in our acceptance of them as full
members of the Church? The
bishop said that our challenge is this: Don’t expect them to ‘grow up
and be just like us adults.’ His
hope for all of us is that we see, accept, and share in the energetic,
lively faith of young people in our parishes.
I’ll give that another ‘Amen!’ – Debbie Kreiner
“NCYC
was incredible. You walked into the RCA Dome, and you saw 24,000 people
cheering and praying and singing... the energy was overwhelming. You learn
a lot about other people’s faith and it’s expression. It’s a shock
at first, but by the end, you’re going along with it all. Can I get an
‘Amen!’ Church?” – Jessyka Criswell
“NCYC
was an awesome experience. It
was amazing to see 24,000 kids together excited about God.
I took away a lot from the weekend.” – Brad Sullivan
“NCYC
was a great opportunity to meet people from all over the United States who
share the same beliefs I do.
It was a neat experience to see so many people enthusiastic about
faith.”
– Stephanie Melillo
“NCYC
was one of those experiences you have to see to believe. (even though
belief is big in the Catholic Church!) There were 24,000 (yes Thousand)
people at the main sessions that filled the R.C.A. Dome in Indianapolis.
We all prayed, sang, and some even danced together. The morning keynote
speakers were an inspiration with their testimony to their faith-works in
their lives. We also had individual workshops that brought people together
in their areas of common concern. The theme of the conference was
"Hope at the Crossroads". Everywhere we went there was a
positive spirit and good friendship that was refreshing for a time like
we are recently experiencing. There IS HOPE in Catholic Youth and I was
honored to share it.” – Joan Egan
“It’s
a wonderful time to have 24,000 people together from all over the US to as
far as Guam and other U.S. Pacific territories. I believe everyone enjoyed
a wonderful time in Indy. The workshops were useful and they suggested
dramas and pop songs as useful tools for youth religious activities. There
was a ‘comedy club’ that used humor to talk about the Catholic faith
which I think was actually very practical. I am confident that the
conference will help me with ideas for ministry in the future.” –
